Department of Accounting

Accounting was one of the pioneering Departments when Adeyemi College of Education began operation on 22nd May, 1964. The Department offered only NCE programme until 1981. Adeyemi College was among the seven Colleges that were upgraded to degree awarding status by Federal Government of Nigeria in 1981. As a result of this, Bachelor of Education in Accounting was one of the pioneering courses offered at the degree level under the close supervision and moderation of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife. Since that time, the Department has turned out many graduates in Accounting. At present, the Department has seventeen regular academic staff, two Non-Academic a Secretary and an Executive Officer.

PHILOSOPHY

Man is inevitably concerned with the native of the past, indicators of the present and future. Accounting offers an understanding of the nature of the society, its value and problems through a critical analysis and assessment of the major events in its social, political and technological developments the major dramatis personae and philosophies behind their actions. The Accounting programme at the NCE level serves not only the immediate role of preparing effective teachers in Accounting for the secondary schools, but also prepares teacher trainees for further education. Accounting graduates are expected to find their relevance within the context of the Nigerian society. Preliminary students would need to regularize their admission through the regular UTME.

OBJECTIVES

i. To develop in the student, the growth of an awareness of his responsibilities and opportunities as a Nigerian citizen.
ii. To stimulate an appreciation of the world in which the student finds himself and to encourage students to develop mentalities which are suitable to post-colonial era and compatible with national and intellectual integrity.
iii. To enlarge students’ knowledge and appreciation of the world beyond Nigeria and Africa and to appreciate the common heritage of mankind.
iv. To enable students to develop an appreciation and understanding of the historical development in Nigeria and the contribution of our past heroes/heroines.
v. To develop in the students, the capability of analyzing issues critically.
vi. To develop skills of the post-secondary approach to the study of Accounting in order to inculcate professional attitude in the students so that he/she can effectively teach Accounting related subjects in primary and secondary schools in Nigeria of the 21st century.
vii. To give students solid foundation for further studies and research in Accounting at local, national and international level.
