THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Adeyemi College of Education was established in 1964 as a Teacher College for the production of Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) graduates. The Department of Geography was one of the founding departments of the College since 1964 and has been turning out students at a progressive rate. During the 1989/1990 session, the Department started Pre NCE Programme in addition to the NCE programmes. Programme instructions are given in form of teaching, lectures, tutorials and practical work in the area of teaching Geography. Occasionally, lectures and seminars by resource and renowned geography lecturers inside and outside the College were also organized. Excursion or study tours were common place within and outside the country under the guidance of the lecturers (outside tours include Ghana) to encourage students to gain wider practical knowledge in their chosen field

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the department is to give well-rounded geographic training along with appropriate methods of knowledge impartation. The programme is intended to produce graduate teachers that are well equipped in teaching geographic knowledge and skills. The programme involves observational, interpretative, descriptive, and analytical techniques of studying geographic phenomena. Consequently, the philosophy of geography programme is to create an opportunity for prospective graduate teachers to:
i. Learn and develop new descriptive, interpretative, and analytical techniques of studying the earth-man relationships
ii. Develop practical skills and methodologies of understanding and teaching geographical features, phenomena and processes of the earth and its environment.
iii. Search for explanation of geographic phenomena and their implication to earth as the home of man.
iv. Develop skills to impart geographical knowledge to students of geography and to promote the learning and teaching of the discipline.
v. Undertake (i) to (iv) above along national aspirations and goals as may be enshrined in the national development.

PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC CONTRIBUTION

i. Training of highly qualified but non-graduate teacher for the basic schools
ii. Training of bachelor’s degree graduates for career opportunities in both teaching and non-teaching careers
iii. Equip students at both the NCE and Bachelor’s programme with suitable analytical and technical skills required for tackling problems of spatial planning and development and management of the environmental resources. .
